Mpox/Monkeypox virus
On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health
Emergency of International Concern for the clade I mpox virus which is circulating
in Central and Eastern Africa. The clade I mpox viruses were unique to Africa until
2024 when a few travel-related cases of the disease were diagnosed in Europe,
Asia, and North America. Although potentially more debilitating, severe illness from
clade I mpox is preventable by the same vaccine that prevents severe illness from
the clade II mpox virus. The risk of mpox infection is extremely low for U.S. workers
at this time. However, employers in the travel and healthcare industries should stay
informed about the current status and spread of clade I mpox.
