OSHA: Safe Use of Extension Ladders Fact Sheet
Workers who use extension ladders face serious risks of falls and electrocutions. This OSHA fact sheet poster explains common ladder hazards and the safe practices employers and workers should follow to reduce injuries, including choosing the right ladder, setting it up correctly, inspecting it before use, and using proper climbing techniques.
- Explains what an extension ladder is and why it must be placed against a stable structure
- Helps users choose the correct ladder based on duty rating / load capacity (Type IAA, IA, I, II, III)
- Emphasizes planning ahead: use ladders rated for the load, follow manufacturer labels, and don’t exceed capacity
- Requires a competent person inspection before use, and tagging defective ladders “Do Not Use”
- Shows proper setup: correct ladder angle (4:1 rule) and extending the ladder 3 feet above the landing surface
- Warns about overhead power lines and using nonconductive side rails when electrical hazards exist (keep at least 10 ft away)
- Safe climbing rules: 3-point contact, face the ladder, keep body between side rails, don’t carry tools in your hands
- “Do Not” reminders: don’t use unstable bases, don’t exceed rating, don’t tie ladders together, don’t move ladder while occupied, don’t lean out, don’t use horizontally
